English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
ALIS offers English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instruction for individuals whose primary language is other than English and wish to strengthen their English language skills and for individuals wishing to prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test.
ESOL courses include instruction in English comprehension, grammar, speaking, writing, and TOEFL preparation courses.
Application Process
- Complete Application Form;
- Submit the application with the $50.00 application fee; and
- Request official transcripts from each institution attended be sent directly to ALIS.

CURRICULUM
Beginning English
ESOL 001 – This beginning class is for students with little understanding of the English alphabet and numbers. The student will learn to pronounce and write each letter and number. No previous knowledge of the English language is required.
ESOL 002 – This beginning course builds upon the skills learned in ESOL 001. In this course students begin to combine letters to form words. The student will learn the role of vowels and consonants in words.
ESOL 003 – This beginning course combines words to form sentences. Nouns, verbs, and modifiers will be explained and used in practical sentence construction.
Intermediate English
ESOL 011 – This intermediate course focuses on English vocabulary in verbal communication.
ESOL 012 – This intermediate course builds on ESOL 011 and it focuses on grammar and sentence structure in verbal communication. (ESOL 011 must be taken prior to taking this course.)
ESOL 013 – This intermediate course combines the skills learned in the two previous courses with writing and reading skills. (ESOL 012 must be taken prior to taking this course.)
ESOL 014 – This intermediate course will prepare the student to speak in front of English speaking individuals. (ESOL 013 must be taken prior to taking this course.)
ESOL 015 – This intermediate course will prepare the student to read English publications and better understand what message is being delivered. (ESOL 014 must be taken prior to taking this course.)
Advanced English
ESOL 021 –This advanced course will prepare the student to read and analyze American English publications.
ESOL 022 – This advanced course will prepare the student to read and understand English used in business relationships.
TOFEL Preparation
ESOL 031 – This advanced course is a TOEFL examination preparation course.
ESOL 032 – This is the second course for preparing the student for the TOEFL examination. Emphasis will be placed on test taking skills. The
